A new play by Hayley Perrin, Bush Chook is a dark, character-driven play that uses comedy and romantic tension to explore the dangers women face, particularly in isolated communities. Set in a remote roadhouse on the edge of the Nullarbor Plain, the piece draws the audience into the charming meeting of two young strangers on a hot December night, days before Christmas. Mary is driving to Perth to visit family, whilst Angus is heading to Adelaide to see his dying father. They talk, flirt, drink Emu Exports, and share stories. At first, their interactions seem light and even fun. But underneath, something more sinister is brewing. Influenced by Wake in Fright and How to Make Gravy, the work explores isolation and the dark truths beneath Australian festivity, culture and isolation.
